Types of design1,2
[The organisers reserve the right to revise the categorisation of the entries proposed by the participants.]
I. Original designs
Typeface designs that are wholly or substantially original in conception and execution. They may be inspired by historical examples, or in the same general style as an existing typeface, but to be considered original they must not be historical revivals, direct imitations of any existing typeface, or intended to be interchangeable with any existing typeface.
II. Historical revivals3
Typeface designs based upon historical models, but not so closely as to be considered derivative designs. (Typefaces that are auto-traced from printed examples, or are otherwise so close to the original as to be considered mere copies, will be considered derivative designs. Similarly, adaptations to new technology of original designs or previous historical revivals created by 19th or 20th century type manufacturers will be considered derivative designs.)
III. Derivative designs4
(a) Custom versions of existing or historical typefaces: additional weights, narrow/expanded versions, romans/italics/schoolbooks/scripts, sans/serifs, text/display/decorative/initials, etc.;
(b) Typefaces made up of new glyphs designed to harmonise with glyphs of existing or historical typefaces (e.g., ligatures, small capitals, old-style/lining/smaller/tabular figures, accented/alternate glyphs, fleurons, etc.) for composition in languages using the same alphabet/writing system;
(c) Typefaces made up of new glyphs designed to harmonise with glyphs of existing or historical typefaces, for composition in languages using different alphabets/writing systems.
Notes
1. It is the responsibility of the person entering a typeface in the competition to attribute the typeface's origins correctly and to secure the necessary permissions. It is not the responsibility of the organisers to obtain this information. The organisers do, however, reserve the right to re-categorise an entry if they believe its design type has been misidentified, or to disqualify an entry entirely if it is found to be a derivative design that has been inadequately identified or has used an original design without permission.
2. Typefaces belonging to various types of design (original/historical/derivative) are considered to be either part of, or additions to, their respective type families/systems/superfamilies. This also applies to extended character sets for OpenType, or AAT (GX-format) fonts; they should be entered in the appropriate competition category.
3. If a historical revival is entered in the competition, necessary information on the original has to be provided, as well as a sample showing, and an assertion that the design is not a direct copy or otherwise a derivative design.
4. If a derivative design is entered in the competition, necessary information on the original has to be provided, as well as a sample showing, and an assertion of consent received from its author and/or copyright owner for creating the derivative typeface, and for entering it in bukva:raz!
