The psychology of word recognition

Saturday 27 September, 10:30 (40 minutes)

Dr Kevin Larson, Microsoft Advanced Reading Technologies

There is a misperception by some in the typographic community that words are recognised by the outline that a word makes. Kevin Larson presents evidence, much of it from detailed measurements of eye movements while reading, that demonstrate that we don’t recognize words by the outline of the word shape; rather, we perceive each of the letters while reading words, and use the letters to recognize a word. Implications for the typographic community will be discussed.
