ATypI Conference 2000 to be held in Leipzig

The Board of Directors of ATypI met on 9 October 1999 to confirm that the venue for the next ATypI conference will be held in the autumn of next year in Leipzig, Germany. Leipzig is the capital of book publishing in Germany, and home to many historic typographic businesses, educators and individuals. The organizers of the conference content will be Eckehart Schumacher-Gebler and Erik Spiekermann.

The City of Leipzig is very pleased to welcome the ATypI conference in the Year 2000, which also is the 600th birthday of Gutenberg. The support of the City will enhance our experience there considerably. It is possible that there will be a pre- or post-conference event day in Berlin, which is only one hour away by train. It is also possible that related events may be developed around the conference in Mainz, the home of Gutenberg.

Eckehart Schumacher-Gebler is a fine press printer, collector, and aesthete who has worked tirelessly to create a type museum in Leipzig to retain all aspects of the craft of fine printing. His contribution will be to keep the conference mindful of the grand and rich traditions of typography and printing, and to guide the conference in learning and appreciating this history.

Erik Spiekermann represents the cutting edge of type and design, and will contribute his modern view and technological sophistication, together with his experience in conference organization. Together they will create a balanced conference content that is assured to appeal to all typophiles and designers.

The Board appreciates the commitment of these individuals to the development of the conference content. We look forward to seeing all of you in Leipzig in 2000.
