Short interview with Erik van Blokland

Are you working on a new font?
I think so. There is one font, called Critter, in development. You can see the pictures on our website www.letterror.com.

How do you get your inspiration for your fonts?
I have no muse. I find any form of type interesting. Sometimes I have to make a font for an illustration, then the illustration is used as inspiration for the font. A font like that I can make in about half an hour.

Do you always start with the same letter?
I have certain strategies. Some shapes are repeated in other letters fx. h/m/n and b/q/p. First I find out how I want the curves to be, then a good start could be the lowercase h.

Is there one letter that always causes problems?
Lowercase g is always interesting...I think special letters like ø. ø is maybe what makes danish typography more fun than others.

So what is your "typo-motto"?
I don't know.................Programming and designing is the same thing...

If you were a letter, which one would you be?
E... because of my name.
