Short interview with Paul van der Laan

Are you working on a new font?
Yes, always... Normally I work on maybe ten different fonts at the same time. All in all I have finished two families but have 20-30 other designs whitch are not finished yet.

What inspires you to a new font?
Everyday life, movies, books, music, playstation or a certain mood. Some typefaces have to have a special mood.

Do you always start with the same letter?
Yes, lowercase a – not saying that I sketch from a-z.

Is there one one letter that always causes trouble?
The o is pretty hard – both lowercase and uppercase. It requires many corrections. The shape of a circle is difficult to work with.

If you were a letter which one would you be?
Can I say a number?... 3. Because of it's many curves. (Hmmm, a gentleman with curves?!)

What is your "typo-motto"?
....Every new project provides the same question: What typeface can I use for this? When I can't answer this question, it's time for designing a new one.
