Call for programme proposals
ATypI 2012 welcomes proposals from around the world that addresses typographic communication from various perspectives including usability, aesthetic, technological, historical, political, cultural, social, linguistic and other uncharted areas.
Types of session
We invite proposals for three different types of sessions:
General programme
ATypI invites proposals for workshops and presentations for its 2012 conference Hong Kong, China, from 10 to 14 October 2012.
These are 30-minute presentations on a specific topic on typography, directed at graphic design practitioners, educators and researchers with intermediate to advanced knowledge in typography, type design and related disciplines.
Special interest forums
Business
Primarily for non-typographers/designers such as marketing, public relations and business development professionals, this forum aims to introduce users of typographic services in Hong Kong and Asia to the value of typography in business. Presentations of case studies of application of type design and typography in branding, publishing, environments, information and areas involving customer experience are welcome. Presentations should be between 20 and 30 minutes.
Education
Aimed at typography/design educators and researchers, this forum focuses on pedagogical issues, curriculum development and academic research related to typography. Proposals for case studies of teaching and learning projects, theoretical presentations and panel discussions are welcome. Presentations/panels should be between 20 and 30 minutes.
Technology
This forum is aimed at developers, type designers and typographers interested in current and emerging technology. Potential topics include font production technologies and methods, technical standards, traditional and digital publishing, mobile technology, etc. Presentations should be between 20 and 30 minutes.
Workshops
Half- or full-day hands-on workshop with a maximum of 25 participants, aimed at typography/design students and practitioners at basic to intermediate levels.
Printed conference proceedings
For proposals in the general programme and special interest forums, there is an opportunity to submit a full written paper of not more than 4,000 words in length. If you indicate that you would like to submit a paper, the deadline for the first draft is 30 June 2012. Selected papers will be published in the printed conference proceedings with an ISBN number. The publication will be distributed during the conference in October, and made available online. Please note that reading your paper as part of your presentation is usually discouraged.
Audience
Conference attendees will represent the craft, business, educational and technological spheres of type and typography. They will include type designers, graphic designers, project managers and software engineers from leading software companies and font foundries, web designers, information designers, researchers, historians, educators, writers, publishers, lettering artists, students, and typography enthusiasts from around the world.
Language
The official conference language is International English. However, we are exploring the feasibility of offering limited simultaneous interpretations if there is a demand.

In addition to English, you may also submit your proposal in Chinese. Simply paste the Chinese text after the English in the text fields.

Programme committee
All abstracts will be read by a selection panel made up of ATypI board members and members of the local preparatory committee. The programme committee may suggest amendments to proposals and full papers.
