Computer tools have revolutionized typographic practice and the emergence of Internet has had a significant impact at other levels no less important. This has led to the emergence of a new field of graphic design, web design, in which typography is still in its infancy. Also other platforms like mobile devices, which are opening other areas to colonize and posing new challenges, including the possibilities of reading that ebook offers. At the same time, some media such as film or television screens, which were a place for the letter virtually since its origins, are evolving and expanding their language.

The idea evolved from investigating how a narrow typeface should look for optimal readability. To avoid a fence-effect, FF Tundra emphasizes the horizontal line. Ludwig Übele combined strong serifs, flat shoulders and open but heavy endings with a moderate contrast to achieve a balanced, legible typeface with a certain softness and humanity. While FF Tundra was designed for continuous text, it is also suitable for magazines and headlines (especially the extraordinary Extra Light weight), not to mention how well it works in newspapers as well. The family consists of six weights from Extra Light to Bold, each with Italics and Small Caps and many OpenType layout features. FF Tundra is a recipient of a Certificate of Excellence in Type Design at the 2011 TDC2 competition.
