Next: St Petersburg

Our 2007 conference in Brighton is now history – well attended and well enjoyed, with a program that wove together the very local English craft tradition and the pervasive worldwide culture of digital fonts. Next year's conference will be held on September 17–21, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Next year will mark the 300th anniversary of Czar Peter the Great's introduction of the Civil Type, a radical reform of the Cyrillic alphabet that laid the foundation for the forms of Russian and other Cyrillic writing and printing that we're familiar with today. The announcement of St. Petersburg was greeted warmly, with many Brighton attendees saying they were looking forward to attending next year as well. Details of the venue and dates for the conference will appear on the website soon.

We also announced our intention to hold the 2009 conference, two years from now, in Mexico City – the first ATypI conference in Latin America, and the first in North America since Vancouver in 2003.

At the Annual General Meeting, the members elected John Berry as ATypI's new president; outgoing president Jean François Porchez becomes Honorary President, along with former president Mark Batty. Newly elected board members are Cynthia Batty, Si Daniels, and Jose Scaglione; re-elected board members are Mark Barratt, Ted Harrison, Gerry Leonidas, Thomas Phinney, Fiona Ross, and Maxim Zhukov.

The board has elected two vice presidents, Mark Barratt and Maxim Zhukov, and confirmed Thomas Phinney in his role as treasurer. Together, the president, vice presidents, and treasurer make up ATypI's steering committee, which works with the executive director and manages day-to-day operations.
