Getting around in HK
Taxis
Taxis are abundant and very affordable in Hong Kong. The red taxies serve the entire city, while green and blue taxies are restricted to the New Territories and Lantau Island respectively.
MTR (railway system)
The Mass Transit Railway (MTR) operates seven lines with 84 stations covering many areas of Hong Kong. It is clean, safe and efficient but may be extremely crowded during rush hours. The easiest way to travel between the two conference locations and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (where the exhibitions are) would be by the MTR East Rail line, between Kowloon Tong and Hung Hom stations.
Octopus cards
Most modes of public transportation accept the stored value Octopus cards including MTR trains, buses and ferries. Simply hold your card close to the reader, and when you hear a beep the fare is taken off your card. You may purchase Octopus cards at the airport and MTR stations, and top up at any 7-11 convenient store or MTR station. You will get your $50 deposit back when you return your card before departure. The card may also be used for payment at select convenient stores, shops and food outlets.
