A film created by Carl Schlesinger and David Loeb Weiss documenting the last day of hot metal typesetting at The New York Times. This film shows the entire newspaper production process from hot-metal typesetting to creating stereo moulds to high-speed press operation. At the end of the film, the new typesetting and photographic production process is shown in contrast to the old ways.

The Guardian opens the year with an exhibition with designer and letterpress printer Alan Kitching. Kitching previously did the typographic 30ft mural of inspiring texts, of the Manchester Guardian’s 1821 manifesto, at newspaper’s former office in Farringdon Road, London.

Exhibition : Aldus Manutius: The struggle and the dream

Aldus Manutius (c. 1450-1515) is a towering figure in the history of the book. He and his partners established the Aldine Press in Venice and his legacy includes the italic type, a number of first editions, and his trademark pocket-sized octavo volumes of classical Greek and Latin texts. This display at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, to mark the 500th anniversary of his death, tells the story of Aldus's remarkable career through books held in their collections.
