In order to more fully understand the cultural environment for ATypI: Reykjavík, and as a point of active research while at the conference, we will be making a real time document of the existing vernacular typography that surrounds the conference space. This project begins with a workshop in which attendees are invited to participate in a collaborative “mining” of typography in the city of Reykjavík. This project will be an ongoing dynamic web-based typographic collection which grows throughout the conference;
Duration of sessions: The workshop portion begins with a 1 hour (maximum) tutorial, devoted to explaining how to capture typography digitally, tag it and upload it. Additional hours will be spent actively capturing typography, through the use of cell phones and digital cameras. Images will be uploaded to a site by all interested conference attendees with our assistance if necessary. Voluntary collection and uploading of images to the site will happen in real time, and will be available to conference attendees for the duration of the conference. During one of the last days of the conference, my colleague and I will present the final collection in the form of a stopmotion/slideshow “film” of all of the images that were captured by attendees.
