Earlier this year, Canada Type introduced the first few text faces incorporating SciType, a flexible combination of oft-ignored letterforms and innovative OpenType programming that allows scientists, engineers, educators, and science writers quick and easy access to Greek characters and math symbols for proper typesetting of scientific exponents, chemical formulae and mathematical equations. SciType is for the many type users who are fed up with fussing with menus, palettes and odd key combinations. In this talk, science writer and type designer Hans van Maanen will visit the ideas behind SciType and its implementation, implications for existing fonts, and potential for raising the bar for typography as it applies to science writing.
