It goes without saying that typography plays a significant role in visual communication. In some cases, however, the typeface itself is more critical to achieve better communication, because graphic designers highly skilled in typography cannot be always engaged in creating media that transfer emergency information, or industrial products which are required to ensure enough safety with a simple warning label. In fact, there is a growing demand for a scientific evidence of typeface’s functionality. Morisawa has partnered with a university laboratory for long periods to research the essence of legibility and readability of some typefaces, such as traditional typefaces, widely-used ones and condensed ones. This has been conducted under various conditions by simulating high or low visual acuity and constriction of visual fields. This presentation will report some of the results, and introduce our efforts to improve the reading experience of Japanese typefaces which are based on the complex character system.
