The first half of the nineteenth century saw an explosion of new typefaces for advertising. However, many of these types first appeared a letterforms cut in wood, often in the work of printers who were producing printed advertising for for the state lottery and for London's theatres and pleasure gardens. This talk will illustrate some of these innovative letterforms and explore their relationship with the metal types which they inspired.

Audience: anyone interested in history of letterforms and typography.
