It is a truth universally acknowledged, that typefaces are derived from their manuscript precursors and that any typeface worth the name must follow the ductus of the written letter to be appreciated. Thus we have a broad nipped pen and a narrow nipped pen to teach us how to design letters. But what if this is not so? Early modern faces tell a different story that has little to do with the Platonic ideas of many modern designers.
