For 50 years Matthew Carter has been designing type, cutting punches, teaching typography and writing about the graphic arts. Initially trained as a punch-cutter at Enschedé, Carter was later responsible for Crosfield's typographic programme; worked as Linotype's in-house designer 1965-1981; co-founded Bitstream in 1981, and Carter & Cone in 1991. Responsible for the design of numerous typefaces, Carter's most ubiquitous fonts include Verdana and Georgia for Microsoft. In 2010, he was named a MacArthur Fellow.
