While the Latin script has been characterized by fine-grained grammatical punctuation since, at the latest, the invention of letterpress printing, Chinese typography has only known punctuation for about one hundred years. Drawing on the the relationship between thought, spoken and written language, and action, this presentation examines how punctuation affects different typographical conventions both in the West and in the Far East. It argues that certain syntactic structures of texts and their formal characteristics can give insights into social, political, and economic conditions.
