Katsumi Asaba

Keynote speaker – Thursday 11 October 2012

Born in 1940. Founded the Katsumi Asaba Design Studio in 1975, he has designed many advertisements for Japanese companies. He produced the poster of the Nagano wintertime Olympics and the logo marks of enterprises and so on. Asaba is the chairman of the Tokyo Type Directors Club (TDC), an organisation that explore the relationships between written and visual expressions. He also the chairman of the Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA) and a committee member of the Tokyo Art Directors Club (ADC). He also represents the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) in Japan. Asaba has a particular interest in the rich cultural heritage of writing in Asia. His principal area of expertise lies in the pictographic Dongba script used in rituals by the Naxi tribe in China. He has been awarded the Tokyo ADC Grand Prix, the Medal with purple ribbon, among others. He also holds the title of sixth degree master in table tennis (Japan Table Tennis Association).
