Managing all fonts in a large family is a demanding task for type designers and font developers. They need to remember complicated procedures when setting the fonts’ naming and declaring various design parameters such as weight, width and slope. Mistakes may go unnoticed until the fonts are released, and some frustrated users discover that a certain weight is not accessible from the font menu of one particular application.

At Fontlab Ltd., we’ve been researching new concepts of organizing font family data, and of presenting them to the font developer. We found that one particular product from our offering, TransType, would be a good candidate for becoming a great way of accessing and editing that data. With only one caveat: TransType would need to be completely reimagined. We have worked for months on a fully new user interface, but not just that: we have also rewritten the application from scratch, using our brand-new technology codenamed Victoria. This presentation will give a first look of what making fonts will look like in the near future.
