Teaching type design today
When Thu 14 Sep 1150
Where UQAM, Cœur des sciences
Who Matthieu Cortat, Simon Mager
During the 2017 ATypI conference, the Master’s in Type Design at Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne (ECAL) will celebrate its first year of existence. This is a good occasion to look back at its origins, and at the questions raised by the creation of such a new programme. How should we define a pedagogy within the field of existing curriculums? How do we rely on Swiss local specificities? How should we think about type today, and in particular about the transmission of craft, technical, historical, and managerial knowledge in an academic environment. Viewed as a contribution to the discussion of type design education, the lecture will turn around interrogations, choices, future improvements, doubts, and convictions. At the end of the presentation, Simon Mager, alumnus and now assistant to the programme, may introduce his diploma project as a case study.
