In the 1960s, Britain regarded events in Europe as happening “on the continent,” a strange and distant place where spaghetti grew on trees, and where teams in Jeux Sans Frontières played the Joker. When politicians needed to prepare the British public for membership of the European Communities, the task was given to typographers and information designers: explaining the real Europe in facts and figures. The London design group Banks+Miles undertook much of this work in the period before accession in 1973, and this presentation focuses on material from their archive at the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading.
