In this live version of Letterform (created in partnership with Monotype) we’ll present five graphic designers and type experts speaking about the letters that fascinate and inspired them. The session’s theme provides a context for their choice. Speakers may zoom in on the minutiae of physical attributes that draw them to a particular letter; and also unravel the wider story of its design and its use in a specific context. Inspiration could come from giving a new insight to well-known classics, or unearthing little-known bright sparks.
The fast-paced change of the magazine context has always inspired experimentation and radical ideas in type to flourish. Art directors can be bold with layout, playing with legibility and up-ending convention in magazine pages. The best typography in magazines provides a barometer of innovation in graphic design as well as reflecting the content of the magazines themselves. From Alexey Brodovitch’s elegant experiments in Harpers Bazaar, to Neville Brody’s type rebellion in The Face, to Richard Turley’s stripped-back typographic wit in Bloomberg Businessweek: magazines provide an almost unlimited source of letterforms for our speakers to explore.
