In a diglossic environment, where two marked varieties of the same language coexist in a single continuum, cultural practices related to language imply attitude, register and intentions. Following respective linguistic conventions, the typographic rendering of a primarily spoken language variety acquires social meaning, associated with preferences, ideology and identity. Within a multidisciplinary theoretical framework, orthographic choices, typographic rendering and microtypography will be discussed, in order to unveil the diversity of typographic conventions used in writing and in print, as well as the typographic issues that arise and originate from the lack of a single orthographic system and/or commonly accepted policies.
