"Give me 26 soldiers of lead and I will conquer the world". As in Gutenberg’s time (to whom this statement has been attributed), throughout history many people have been aware of the importance of typography in society. Both the attempts by the authorities to control presses and its use in defense of freedom demonstrates that, from its origins in the 15th century, printing has been feared and respected for its ability to disseminate ideas, raise awareness, mobilize population and, ultimately, contribute to democracy.
With respect to these reasons, when experts say that we are in the middle of four huge scale crises (financial, energetic, food and democratic) and citizens are demanding substantial changes, the question arises, what is the role of graphic design and typography on these changes? Could they become agents of social change?
