Updating, expanding and refining the UK Transport alphabet dating back to 1957, by Henrik Kubel. From the 2013 ATypI conference in Amsterdam.
I would like to talk about my collaboration with Margaret Calvert in regard to New Transport. I have since 2010 worked in close collaboration with Margaret on updating, expanding and refining this seminal alphabet dating back to 1957. I will talk about the history of the typeface and also very much about the future use of this. I will show our design process, the result! and also a couple of 'live projects' where the font(s) have been applied already. One of the projects will be 'www.gov.uk'. New Transport font will be commercially released in September 2013 and will comprise of 6 weights + true Italics. The fonts have been designed with extended character sets and support Greek and Cyrillic language setting also. Footnote 1: in 2012 under the direction of Ben Terrett UK Government commissioned a special screen version (Light + Bold) of the font for use across all of their websites. Footnote 2: gov.uk won (as the first digital project ever) Design of the year by the Design Museum in London earlier this month.
