The Infancy of the Monotype Library

British Monotype was formed in 1897, an offshoot of its American counterpart. The company spent its first years adapting a selection of popular British foundry types of the day to show the typecasting and setting prowess of its machines, but the types themselves required an ambitious amount of development.

Using what little we know of the first years, with what we can deduce from later activity, this talk will look at these first releases and how they relate to the library built in their wake.

Presented by Daniel Rhatigan at ATypI Barcelona 2014
