The Maciet collection at the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris, a delightful chaos of typographic diversity

Jules Maciet was one of those crazy collectors. He aimed at building a reference library of inspiration material for artisans and craftsmen. In the manner of a “cabinet de curiosités”, he compulsively started a collection of pictures which is unique in its genre.

Free from all considerations, he cut, dismantled, reassembled many different sources to gather them in big and heavy catalogs. Rare books, ephemera from all centuries, jobbing works, brochures, engravings, type specimens…, despite the usual librarian respect to the media, he built a massive collection of reference pictures from all origins with scissors and glue, with a strongly subjective classification system. This talk proposes a browsing through only a fragment of this collection, the "printing & typography" section, and will expose the odd gems & hidden treasures that Maciet made freely accessible for everyone, as they still are today.
